Why is tomato a fruit and not a vegetable?
« on: November 11, 2022, 02:04:38 PM »
It is both.I know how that sounds, but allow me to explain.
Firstly, the bit that’s probably more surprising, is the definition of a vegetable. “a plant or part of a plant used as food, typically as an accompaniment to meat or fish, such as a cabbage, potato, carrot, or bean.” A tomato is a part of a plant that we use as food, so it qualifies. Now, about the fruit bit. Another definition is incoming. “the seed-bearing product that grows from the ovary of a flowering plant” The tomato plant is a flowering plant, which produces tomatoes from it’s ovary, so it qualifies. See the illustration below for illumination

Because of the way the words are popularly used, they are treated as if they are two opposite categories, or at least, distinct categories, but that’s not the case. Technically speaking, roots, like ginger, are also vegetables, but also a spice at the same time. The words describe two different manners of classification, is all.
