What is the benefit of not eating dinner?
« on: June 18, 2023, 09:59:45 AM »

Much has been made of the benefits of skipping dinner or intermittent fasting. Some believe that skipping dinner can lead to weight loss, better digestion, better sleep, and even a longer life. However, the scientific evidence underlying these claims is limited and inconclusive.

Weight loss: One of the main reasons people skip dinner is to lose weight. The idea is that by eating fewer calories at night, the body will burn fat stores for energy instead of relying on food consumed during the day. Studies on whether it causes weight loss have shown mixed results. Some studies show that it can be an effective weight loss strategy, while others show no significant difference in weight loss compared to those who eat dinner more often.

Improves digestion: Some people find that skipping dinner can improve digestion and reduce symptoms such as bloating, gas and acid reflux. However, scientific evidence supporting this claim is limited. In fact, skipping meals can lead to later overeating and indigestion, which can worsen digestive symptoms. Better sleep: There is some evidence that eating a heavy meal before bed can affect the quality of your sleep. However, skipping dinner may not be the best option. It is recommended to have a light meal a few hours before going to bed to promote better sleep.

Extends life: Several animal studies show that intermittent fasting can increase life expectancy and reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease. However, more research is needed to determine if this applies to humans as well.

In general, the benefits of skipping dinner are largely based on anecdotal evidence, and there is limited scientific research to support these claims. Skipping meals can also have negative consequences, such as reduced energy, poor concentration and lack of nutrition. Always consult a healthcare professional before making any significant changes to your diet or eating habits.
