Bursitis is a condition in which the bursae, small fluid-filled sacs that cushion bones, muscles, and tendons near the joints, become inflamed. This can cause pain, swelling, and stiffness in the affected area. Bursitis most commonly affects the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee joints, but can occur in other areas as well.

Bursitis can be caused by repetitive movements, overuse of a joint, trauma, infection, or certain medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and gout. Treatment for bursitis typically involves rest, ice, and anti-inflammatory medications. In some cases, a doctor may recommend physical therapy or corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation and improve mobility. Surgery is rarely needed for bursitis.
