Physiotherapy:Physiotherapy or physical therapy is a medical system that is completely independent, and a physiotherapy doctor can independently diagnose and provide treatment to the patient, according to the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO). According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT), only those who have a bachelor's professional degree from a recognized university can provide medical care independently as a physiotherapy doctor or physiotherapist.
Physiotherapy is one of the most important and an essential branch of modern medical science. Medicine alone cannot provide the complete recovery of all diseases. Physiotherapy is the way to get the full recovery of all the diseases that arise from various mechanical problems.
Physiotherapy is a modern and scientific method of treatment in which a physiotherapist listens to the patient, sees the patient well and, if necessary, determines the exact type of disease, injury or deformity of the patient through various experiments and treats the patient through various types of physical methods such as manual technique, heat and exercise.
The role of physiotherapy in road accidents, physical disabilities, disability, paralysis and the return of the patient to normal life after major surgery is undeniable. Moreover, physiotherapy is a globally recognized treatment for various types of arthritis, head, neck, shoulder, back, waist and knee pain, and sports injuries.
Introduction of Physiotherapy in Bangladesh:Physiotherapy treatment is not a recent treatment. Hippocrates introduced physiotherapy treatment through massage and manual therapy in ancient Greece. In 460 BC, Hector used a branch of physiotherapy treatment now called hydrotherapy.
As far as it is known, in 1894, the current stream of physiotherapy treatment i.e. manual therapy, manipulative therapy, exercise therapy, hydrotherapy, electrotherapy, etc. was introduced. Physiotherapy treatment began in New Zealand in 1913 and in the United States it was in 1914.
The journey of physiotherapy in Bangladesh is after a long time. Physiotherapy treatment was started in independent Bangladesh in 1972 by foreign physiotherapists for the treatment and rehabilitation of war-wounded freedom fighters. After this, the use of physiotherapies continued to grow in this country. Realizing its importance, a bachelor's degree was introduced under the Faculty of Medicine at The University of Dhaka. At present, physiotherapy graduation courses are available in 11 institutes including NITOR, CRP, People's University, Gono University, State College of Health Sciences, SAIC Institute, JUST, IHT (Dhaka & Rajshahi). Master's courses are available in two institutes.
