Calcium is one of the most abundant minerals in the body and it’s extremely important for a myriad of functions including teeth and bone health as well as nerve signaling. It also plays a role in heart and muscle function too.

The average person needs a minimum of around 1000–1300mg of calcium per day.

Here are five foods high in calcium.

Parmesan Chees

28g or one ounce of Parmesan packs approximately 242mg of calcium, that’s nearly a quarter of daily needs.

Leafy Greens

Low Fat Yogurt

There’s around 252mg of calcium in a cup of plain low-fat yogurt.

Dry roasted soy beans

Half a cup of dry roasted soybeans contains around 230mg of calcium.

Milk

There’s around 300–320mg of calcium in a cup of milk.

When it comes to calcium deficiency, the severity of symptoms depends on how long you’ve been in a state of low calcium, otherwise called hypocalcemia.

Typical symptoms include:

    -muscles aches and spasms
    -anxiety
    -depression
-a tingling or numb sensations in the feet or hands
    -fatigue
    -irregular heartbeat
    -tooth decay and osteoporosis

It’s also important to note that calcium deficiencies are rarely due to a low intake of dietary calcium, if you don’t have enough vitamin D in your system, your body might struggle to effectively absorb calcium.

|| Vitamin D deficiency is the most common cause of hypocalcemia in primary care.

So while it’s important to eat calcium-rich foods, it’s also essential to synthesize vitamin D from sunshine exposure or to supplement with vitamin D to ensure better calcium absorption.
